Tea Wars
In looking over old exterior views on vintage tea room postcards from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, it appears that between World War One and World War Two, the tea rooms of the British Commonwealth were experiencing something like the American "cola wars" of the 1970s and 1980s, only with respect to tea.
During this era, British tea shops and tea rooms displayed prominent exterior signage advertising the brand that they sold or served exclusively. This implies that regional and local distribution exclusives were being rammed down the throats of the tea room proprietors.
Judging by the number of signs photographed, the leading player in the "tea wars" of the 1920s and 1930s was Lyons.
Globalization
In the 100 years since then, global holding companies have bought out many famous brands of tea that were once independent concerns. There is not enough room here to name them all, but this is a partial list:
Bigelow Tea is privately owned by the Bigelow Tea Company, headquartered in the United States.
Brooke Bond Tea is now owned by Unilever, headquartered in England, but the former Brooke Bond brand PG Tips was sold off separately and is now owned by Lipton Teas and Infusions, headquartered in the Netherlands.
Bushells Tea is now owned by Lipton Teas and Infusions, headquartered in the Netherlands.
Fortnum & Mason Tea is privately owned by Wittington Investments Limited, headquartered in England.
Horniman's Tea is now owned by JDE Peet's, headquartered in the Netherlands.
Lipton Tea is now Lipton Teas and Infusions, headquartered in the Netherlands, except for Liptons of India, Nepal, and Indonesia which are owned by Unilever, headquartered in England.
Lyons Tea is now owned by Lipton Teas and Infusions, headquartered in the Netherlands.
Luzianne Tee is now owned by Reily Foods Company, headquartered in the United States.
Red Rose Tea is now owned by Lipton Teas and Infusions, headquartered in the Netherlands, except in the United States, where it is owned by Teekanne.
Salada Tea is now owned in Canada by Lipton Teas and Infusions, headquartered in the Netherlands, except in the United States, where it is owned by Salada Foods, a division of Redco Foods, which in turn is now owned by Teekanne, headquartered in Germany.
Teekanne Tea, headquartered in Germany, has not been bought out by a global food corporation, and has managed to acquire a few smaller brands.
Tetley Tea is now owned by Tata Global Beverages, headquartered in India.
Typhoo Tea is now owned by Supreme Imports, headquartered in England.
Twinings Tea is now owned by Associated British Foods, headquartered in England.
Wissotzky Tea, formerly headquartered in Russia, is still an independent brand, now headquartered in Israel.
