Japanese Cup of Knowledge with reticulated (pierced) saucer, back-stamped with Crossed Laurel leaves, side view

Quite a few cups were made in Japan for export to countries such as England, Ireland, Canada, Australia, or the United States of America. If they contain words, the words are in English. Depending upon the laws of the various Anglophone nations at the time of their manufacture, they may or may not be back-stamped "Japan" or "Made in Japan," In some cases and for some nations, only a sticker was required, and these were often removed or lost while washing the cup.

Even those pieces which are not marked as originating in Japan can often be identified as such due to the greyish colour of the Japanese porcelain clay body, which is distinctly different from white English bone china or white American semi-vitreous china.
