Westminster China backstamp of the 1970s era

Westminster China was a pottery company in Australia. The company was in existence from 1954 through the mid-1990s. There are numerous dateable variations of the company logo -- from 1954 to 1962 a design of Westminster Abbey in England was used, and after that a capital W surmounted by a crown, first with asimple sans serif font for the company name, and, after 1970, with a heavier logo font. The example shown here is from the early 1970s.

Westminster specialized in hostess gift ware such as ashtrays, nut dishes. cup and saucer trios, and 6, 12, or 16 piece trio sets. They did not actually create unglazed ware, but rather designed what are called "blanks" for manufacture in Asian countries and then decorated them and glazed them in Australia. At the time this practice was begun, the nation of origin of the blanks did not need to be stated in the backstamp, but after 1993, when it was required by law to be added, Westminster ware bore the national origin notations for blanks made in Japan, China, or Taiwan, depending on the piece.

Westminster decorated only one fortune telling tea cup and saucer set, the Morley House Tea Leaf Reading Tea Cup.
