Jackson and Gosling Cup of Knowledge Basketweave
From Mystic Tea Room
This Cup of Knowledge cup and saucer set was manufactured by the Grosvenor China Company, under its Jackson and Gosling name, in the Ye Olde English pattern. I have given the unnamed design the name "Wreath." The Cup of Knowledge cartomancy decal design was applied to tea cups made, decorated, and fired at the British Empire Exhibition during 1924 and 1925 by a collaborative effort of six potteries. This world's fair event was held at Wembley, and some cups were marked as souvenir items, with the Wembley location and year date -- but not every cup design has been found in a Wembley variant. Regardless of the marking, the British Empire Exhibition cups are all small and rather vertical in form, because they were fired in a newly-built replica of a 19th century bottle kiln that had limited interior space. After the Exhibition closed, Grosvenor China Company / Jackson and Gosling / Ye Olde English made very few further cartomancy cups because the decal design for The Cup of Knowledge that had been shared among the six potteries was purchased for exclusive use by Aynsley.
